How to Apply Visa to China

(Updated in June, 2025)

A. Special reminder before submitting your application

1. New China Online Visa Application System was officially launched by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Bahrain starting from June 15, 2025.

All applicants, including diplomats, government officials, but excluding visa applications for Hong Kong SAR of China and Macao SAR of China, are required to access and complete China Visa Application Form through new China Online Visa Application( https://consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/ ). 

2. After the approval of online visa preliminary review, the applicants can come to the Embassy to submit the passport and qualified photo (if not passed in the process of application), and collect biometric information without making an appointment. 

Your application will be declined or you can be refused entry permissionto China if youprovided inaccurate, false or misleading information. If necessary, the consular officer may require the applicant to provide other proof documents or supplementary materials, or require an interview with the applicant.

3. All applicants must have your fingerprints collected, and the following applicants are exempted from collecting fingerprints.  

① Applicants under the age of 14 or over 70;

② Diplomatic passport holders, or applicants eligible for Diplomatic, Service and Courtesy visas

③ Applicants who already had their fingerprints collected within the past five years at the Chinese Embassy in Bahrain;

④ Applicants with all fingers mutilated or uncollectible;

⑤Other special arrangement. (short-term visas applicants for one or two entries will be exempted from fingerprints collection until December 31,2025)

4. After the visa application is submitted online, it normally takes 1 to 2 working days for the preliminary review and approval. After the applicants come to the Embassy and submit the passport and other materials, it normally takes 3 to 4 working days to process visa applications and make the visa. There is still a possibility to prolong the processing time. If you are asked to provide further documents, we will contact you and inform you of the processing time. You may request express service but it must be approved by a consular officer.

5. The Chinese Embassy in Bahrain does not accept documents by mail and payment online.

B. Steps to apply for a visa to China

STEP 1: Prepare Documents

Please read Part C "Materials and documents required for China visa application" carefully and prepare relevant materials and documents as required.

STEP 2: Complete China Online Visa Application Form

Please log in to and complete your China Online Visa Application Form through the China Online Visa Application systemhttps://consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/. Hereinafter as “system”). After registering and logging in to your email address, please click “Step-by-Step Guidance” to learn more about visa application process through guidance, and then click “Start an Application” to apply and submit.Your visa application will be submitted successfully only after you click “Confirm and Submit”. In the “Track My Application” of the system, it is displayed as “In checking...Please follow up your application”.

Please note:

Each applicant (including minors) is required to complete the online application form.

STEP3: Waiting for the Approval

Please check the assessing result of your application. The assessing result will be shown in the system after 1 to 2 working days. Applicant can find the assessing result in “Track My Application” once submitting the application. You can modify the application form or reload missing docs in “Track My Application” once the system reminds.

The Chinese Embassy in Bahrain will only notify the applicant in the system whether the visa application is approved or not. Under certain circumstances, the Embassy will contact the applicant for some questions. Please be sure to pay attention to your email and phone number that you left when applying for the visa online.

STEP 4: Submit passports and other documents

There is no need to make an appointment to submit passports and other documents. If the "Track My Application" in the system shows "Passport to be submitted", you can come to the Embassy in person during the office hours. Individuals who are exempt from fingerprint collection (please refer to Part A)can entrust others to submit documents and passports.

The following application materials must be submitted when arriving at the Embassy.

1. Passport. Original passport with at least six months of remaining validity and blank visa pages.

2. A recently-taken color passport photo (bare-head, full face) against a white background. (not needed for now)

3. Original Chinese passport (applicable to those who once had Chinese nationality and later became a foreign national). If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you must provide the original Chinese passport and a copy of the passport photo data page.

4.  Originals or copies of other application materials required by the Embassy (if applicable).

STEP 5: Payment and Collection

You will be given a pickup form when submitting your passports at the consular office. You must bring the pickup form for passport collection and make the payment for your visa application. You may ask someone else to collect your passport. Your nominated person must present the pickup form and his or her ID for passport collection and make the payment for your visa application. The payment will only be made when picking up the passports (only card payment is accepted).

C. Materials and documents required for China visa application

1. Basic Documents

(1)Passport

Original passport with at least six months of remaining validity and blank visa pages.

(2) A recently-taken color passport photo (bare-head, full face) against a white background ( photo needs to be uploaded in the system).

(3) Proof of legal stay or residence status (applicable to those not applying for the visa in their country of citizenship)

If you are not applying for the visa in the country of your citizenship, you must provide the original of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying.

(4) Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens who used to be Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship)

If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you should provide your previous Chinese passport held and a photocopy of its data page.

If you have obtained Chinese visas before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport that does not contain any Chinese visa, you should present the photocopy of the previous passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate, as well as the previous Chinese visa page. (If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of name change.)

F

Issued to those who intend to go to China for non-commercial activities such as exchanges, visits, and study tours

An invitation letter issued by the relevant entity or individual in China.The invitation should contain:

(1) Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, nationality, passport number, etc.)

(2) Information on the planned visit (purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relations between the applicant and the inviting entity or individual, financial source for expenditures)

(3) Information on the inviting entity or individual (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or the inviting individual)

G

Issued to those who intend to transit through China

An onward air (train or ship) ticket with confirmed date and seat to the destination country or region.

J1

Issued to resident foreignjournalists of foreign news organizations stationed in China. 

The intended durationof stay in China exceeds 180days.

Visa Notification Letter issued by the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China.

Applicants should contact the press section of the Chinese Embassy/Consulate General in advance and complete relevant formalities.

We kindly remind you that:

Holders of J1 Visa shall, within 30 days from the date of their entry, apply to the exit/entry administrations of public security under local people's governments at or above the county level in the proposed places of residence for foreigners' residence permits.

J2

Issued to foreign journalistswho intend to go to China forshort-term news coverage.

The intended duration of stayin China is no more than 180days.

Visa Notification Letter issued by the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China or other authorized units in China.

Applicants should contact the press section of the Chinese Embassy/Consulate General in advance and complete the required formalities.

L

Issued to those who intend to go to China as a tourist

Documents showing the itinerary including air ticket booking record (round trip) and proof of a hotel reservation, etc. OR

an invitation letter issued by a relevant entity or individual in China with the photocopy of the inviter’s Chinese ID. The invitation letter should contain:

(1) Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, nationality, passport number, etc.)

(2) Information on the planned visit (arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, etc.)

(3) Information on the inviting entity or individual (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or the inviting individual)

M

Issued to those who intend to go to China for commercial and trade activities

Documents on the commercial activity issued by a trade partner in China, or trade fair invitation or other invitation letters issued by relevant entity or individual. The invitation letter should contain:

(1) Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, nationality, passport number, etc.)

(2) Information on the planned visit (purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relations between the applicant and the inviting entity or individual, financial source for expenditures)

(3) Information on the inviting entity or individual (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or the inviting individual)

Q1

Issued to those who are familymembers of Chinese citizens or of foreigners with Chinesepermanent residence and intend to go to China for familyreunion, or to those who intend to go to China for the purpose of foster care.

The intendedduration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.

"Family members" refers to spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughters and parents-in-law

For family reunion, the following documents are required:

(1) An invitation letter issued by a Chinese citizen or a foreign citizen with a Chinese permanent residence permit who lives in China. The invitation letter should contain:

a) Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, nationality, passport number, etc.)

b) Information on the visit ( purpose of visit, intended arrival date, place(s) of intended residence, intended duration of residence, arrival and departure dates, relations between the applicant and the inviting entity or individual, financial source for expenditures)

c) Information on the inviting individual (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of legal representative or the inviting individual, etc.)

(2) Photocopy of Chinese ID of the inviting individual or foreign passport and permanent residence permit.

(3) Original and photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate, certification of kinship issued by Public Security Bureau or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of family members between applicant and inviting individual.

Forfoster care, the following documents are required:

(1) The original ofFoster entrustment notarization issued by Chinese Embassies/Consulates General in foreign countries or Foster Care Power of Attorney notarized and authenticated in the country of residence or in China.

(2) Original and photocopy of the consignor's passport(s).

(3) A letter of consent on foster care issued by the trustee living in China who has agreed to provide foster care services and a photocopy of the ID of the trustee.

(4) A photocopy of the certificate indicating the permanent residence status abroad of the parent(s) when the child was born, provided that either or both parents of the child are Chinese citizens.

Holders of Q1 Visa shall, within 30 days from the date of their entry, apply to the exit/entry administrations of public security under local people's governments at or above the county level in the proposed places of residence for foreigners' residence permits.

Q2

Issued to those who intend to visit their relativeswho are Chinese citizens residing in China or foreigners with Chinese permanent residence status.

The intended duration of stayin China is no more than 180 days.

(1) An invitation letter issued by a Chinese citizen or a foreign citizen with a Chinese permanent residence permit who lives in China. The invitation letter should contain:

a) Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, nationality, passport number, etc.)

b) Information on the visit (purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relations between the applicant and the inviting individual, financial source for expenditures)

c) Information on the inviting individual (name, contact number, address, signature etc.)

(2) Photocopy of Chinese ID or foreign passport and permanent residence permit of the inviting individual.

R

Issued to those who are high-level foreign talents or foreigners whose skills are urgently needed in China.

Confirmation Letter for Foreigners of High Talent or Specialist.

*Spouses and children under the age of 18submit proof of relationship (e.g. marriagecertificate, birth certificate) to apply for an S2 visa if needed.

S1

Issued to those who intend togo to China to visit the foreigners working or studyingin China to whom they are spouses, parents, sons or daughters under the age of 18 or parents-in-law, or to those who intend to go to China for other private affairs.

The intended duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.

(1) An invitation letter from the inviting individual (a foreigner who stays or resides in China for work or studies) which contains:

a) Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, nationality, passport number, etc.)

b) Information on the visit (purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place of intended residence, relations between the applicant and the inviting individual, financial source for expenditures, etc.)

c) Information on the inviting individual (name, contact telephone number, address, signature, etc.)

(2) A photocopy of the inviting individual's passport and residence permit.

(3)Original and photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate, certification of kinship issued by Public Security Bureau or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of immediate family members between applicants and inviting individual.

"immediate family members " refers to spouses, parents, sons or daughters under the age of 18, parents-in-law.

We kindly remind you that:

Holders of S1 Visa shall, within 30 days from the date of their entry, apply to the exit/entry administrations of public security under local people's governments at or above the county level in the proposed places of residence for foreigners' residence permits.

S2

Issued to those who intend tovisit their family members whoare foreigners working or studying in China (The intended duration of stay in China is no more than 180 Days), or tothose who intend to go toChina for other private matters.

"Family members" refers to spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughters and parents-in-law.

For visiting family members for a short period, the following documents are required:

(1) An invitation letter issued by the inviting individual (a foreigner who stays or resides in China for work or studies) which contains:

a) Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, nationality, passport number, etc.)

b) Information on the visit (purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relations between the applicant and the inviting individual, financial source for expenditures, etc.)

c) Information on the inviting individual (name, contact telephone number, address, signature, etc.)

(2) A photocopy of the inviting individual's (a foreigner who stays or lives in China for work or studies) passport and residence permit.

(3) Photocopy of certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of family members between the applicant and the inviting individual.

For private affairs, documentation identifying the nature of the private affairs should be provided as required by the consular officer.

X1

Issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of more than 180 days

(1) Original and photocopy of the Admission Letter issued by a school or other entities in China.

(2) Original and photocopy of "Visa Application for Study in China" (Form JW201 or Form JW202).

For students enrolled in primary and secondary schools, the original or photocopy of "Confirmation Form for ElementaryStage Students to Study in China" issued by the admitted institution and authorized by the provincial education administration. Form JW202 is not needed.

We kindly remind you that:

Holders of X1 Visa shall, within 30 days from the date of their entry, apply to the exit/entry administrations of public security under local people's governments at or above the county level in the proposed places of residence for foreigners' residence permits.

X2

Issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of no more than 180 days

Original and photocopy of Admission Notice issued by a school or other entities in China.

Z

Issued to those who intend to work in China

One of the following documents:

(1) The "Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit".

(2) The“Invitation Letter for Foreigners to Engage in Offshore Oil Operations”issued by CNOOC.

(3) The “Registration Certificate of Permanent Representative Office of Foreign (Regional) Enterprises” issued by the Chinese market supervision and management department.

(4)The Original of the“Confirmation Letter for Employment of Staff in Foreign Cultural Centers” issued by the Bureau of International Exchange and Cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. (*Please present the original certification at the Embassy)

(5) The“Representative Qualification Confirmation Letter” issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

(6) The original copy of the commercial performance approval document issued by the competent cultural authority (if the performance period does not exceed 90 days, the "Approval of Short-Term Employment for Foreigners working in P.R.China" must also be provided)

We kindly remind you that:

Holders of Z Visa (duration of stay exceed 30 days) shall, within 30 days from the date of their entry, apply to the exit/entry administrations of public security under local people's governments at or above the county level in the proposed places of residence for foreigners' residence permits.
